EDITORS COMMENTS
Clarendon House, located on Piccadilly in the heart of London, was a grandiose mansion built in the 1660s by the influential and wealthy English statesman, Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon. The house was constructed using stone intended for the repair of St. Paul's Cathedral, causing quite a scandal and financial embarrassment at the time. The diversion of building materials from the cathedral restoration project was seen as an egregious act, particularly given the enormous cost of 50,000 pounds that Lord Clarendon had incurred in building his new residence. Despite the controversy surrounding its construction, Clarendon House was a magnificent structure, boasting elegant interiors and extensive gardens. However, the financial strain caused by the building project ultimately led Lord Clarendon to sell the house in 1674 to the Duke of Albemarle, who renamed it Albemarle House. The house continued to be a residence for the Duke and his successors until the late 18th century. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, captures the grandeur and historic significance of Albemarle House, which still stands today as a reminder of the extravagance and controversy of London's past. The stone used in its construction, once intended for the repair of St. Paul's Cathedral, now forms part of this historic building's enduring legacy.
