The experiment, conducted by Scottish surgeon James Young Simpson, aimed to test the effectiveness and safety of chloroform as a painkiller for surgical procedures. At the time, medical professionals were searching for a reliable alternative to the risky and often ineffective methods of anesthesia, such as ether and nitrous oxide. Greener, who was a local resident of Edinburgh, Scotland, where the experiment took place, was reportedly in good health before the procedure.
