EDITORS COMMENTS
This carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph features Carl XV, the King of Sweden and Norway, dressed in his military uniform. Born as Prince Carl of Denmark and Norway on September 11, 1826, he ascended to the Swedish throne on March 18, 1859, following the death of his cousin, King Oscar I. At the time of this portrait, taken around 1872, Carl XV was also the reigning monarch of Norway. Carl XV's reign was marked by significant political and social changes in both Sweden and Norway. He played a crucial role in the modernization of the Swedish military and the expansion of its influence in Europe. In Norway, he implemented various reforms aimed at strengthening the country's economy and improving the living conditions of its people. The King's leadership was not without challenges, however. He faced opposition from conservative forces within the Swedish Riksdag (parliament), which hindered his efforts to implement reforms. In Norway, his attempts to centralize power and impose Swedish rule met with resistance, leading to the Norwegian Constitution Crisis in 1884. Despite these challenges, Carl XV remained committed to the modernization and progress of his kingdoms. His reign ended tragically on September 8, 1872, when he was accidentally shot during a hunting expedition. The loss of their monarch deeply affected the Swedish and Norwegian people, and his death marked the beginning of a new era in the history of both countries. This photograph, taken by the renowned Swedish photographer Mayer, offers a glimpse into the life of a monarch who played a pivotal role in shaping the modern history of Sweden and Norway. The image of Carl XV in his military uniform, with a determined expression and a steady gaze, serves as a testament to his leadership and legacy.
