EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the essence of Geoffrey Chaucer, the renowned English poet and author, in his role as the Parson, as depicted in the Ellesmere Manuscript of The Canterbury Tales, circa 1387. Chaucer, dressed in the robes and tonsure of a monk, sits confidently atop his horse, a symbol of his spiritual authority and mobility. The tonsure, a distinctive haircut indicative of a monk or priest, is clearly visible on the left side of his shaved head. Chaucer's literary masterpiece, The Canterbury Tales, is considered a foundational work in the English language and a cornerstone of English literature. The tales, a collection of stories told by a group of pilgrims on their journey to Canterbury Cathedral, showcase Chaucer's keen insight into human nature and his ability to craft vivid and memorable characters. The Ellesmere Manuscript, one of the most beautiful and well-known copies of The Canterbury Tales, was completed around 1400, some 15 years after Chaucer's death. It is believed that Chaucer himself may have had a hand in the selection and organization of the tales, making this image of him as the Parson an accurate representation of the author in his later years. The image also serves as a reminder of the historical context in which Chaucer wrote. The Middle Ages were a time of great change and cultural development in Europe, and Chaucer's works, with their blend of the sacred and the secular, reflect the complexities and contradictions of the period. This photograph print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the past and allows us to connect with Chaucer and his world in a tangible and meaningful way.
