EDITORS COMMENTS
Arnold Mytens, also known as Arnoldus Montanus or Arnold Boulonois, was a prominent Flemish painter active in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Born in Antwerp in 1541, Mytens was a key figure in the Antwerp Mannerist school, which was characterized by its elaborate and decorative style. In this image from Mary Evans Prints Online, Mytens is depicted in the act of painting, with a serious expression and a furrowed brow as he carefully applies paint to his canvas with a palette knife and brushes. He wears the fashionable attire of the time, including a ruff collar and a voluminous doublet, signaling his status as a successful artist and member of the artistic elite. The large, ornate room in which Mytens works is filled with the tools and accoutrements of his trade. A table laden with paint pots, brushes, and palettes sits to the left, while a shelf holds an array of finished paintings and sketches. A window lets in natural light, illuminating the scene and casting a warm glow on the artist's face. Mytens' career spanned several decades and included a number of significant commissions, including portraits of members of the Habsburg dynasty and religious works. He was also known for his landscapes and genre scenes, which often featured elaborate architectural details and intricate costumes. Despite his success, Mytens' life was not without tragedy. He lost his wife and several children in the late 1590s, and he died in Antwerp in 1616. Today, Mytens is remembered as a master of Flemish Mannerism and a pioneer of the Baroque style. This evocative print offers a glimpse into the world of a talented artist at work, capturing the intensity and focus required to create a masterpiece.
