Situated on the Danube - submerged in 1970 due to the building of a hydro-electric station. Three kilometres from Orsoza. Known as a free port and smugglers nest. Controlled by Austria-Hungary and therefore free from taxes/customs for many years. Population was 600-1000 inhabitants

Ada-Kaleh, also known as 'Bahariye,' was a free port and a notorious smugglers' nest, providing refuge from the taxation and customs of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that controlled the surrounding areas. Bego Mustaffa, a man of power and influence, ruled over this unique community with a firm hand. The island, situated just three kilometers from Orsova, was strategically located, allowing it to serve as a crucial trading hub along the Danube. The fortified walls of Ada-Kaleh protected its residents from external threats, while the island's proximity to the border with Romania and Bulgaria made it a haven for smugglers. Despite its illicit activities, Ada-Kaleh was a vibrant and culturally rich community.
