EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the delivery of a special letter from the King to Sir Patrick Duncan, Governor General of South Africa. In an era between the wars, when air travel was still a novelty, this image showcases the pioneering spirit of Imperial Airways' flying boat "Centurion". The photograph depicts Major Tryon, the Postmaster General, carefully placing the King's letter into the mail bag before it embarks on its journey from Southampton to Durban. The occasion marked not only an important correspondence between two influential figures but also symbolized a groundbreaking milestone for postal services. This event inaugurated the Post Office's innovative "all-the-way-by-air" scheme, revolutionizing mail transportation. With a flat rate of 1 1/2 d. per 1/2 ounce and no air mail surcharge applied, this initiative aimed to expedite communication across vast distances. Transported back to June 29th, 1937, we witness this historical moment frozen in time through monochrome photography. The solemn expressions on Major Tryon's face convey both responsibility and pride as he handles such precious cargo entrusted by royalty. Preserved by TopFoto. co. uk as part of their extensive collection documenting twentieth-century Europeana photography and press events, this remarkable image serves as a reminder of how technology has shaped our world over time. It invites us to reflect upon advancements that once seemed extraordinary but have now become commonplace in our modern lives.
