This powerful image captures a pivotal moment in French history as renowned writer Emile Zola (1840-1902) stands alongside his allies, Maitre Labori (1846-1922) and Maitre Clamenceau (1841-1917), during the Dreyfus Affair trial in 1898. The Dreyfus Affair was a highly controversial case of anti-Semitism and miscarriage of justice that divided France. Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), a Jewish army captain, was falsely accused of treason and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island. Zola, a prominent figure in French literature and a staunch defender of justice, took up Dreyfus's cause and published an open letter, "J'Accuse," in the newspaper L'Aurore on January 13, 1898. In the letter, Zola accused the military establishment of anti-Semitism and called for a retrial. This bold move put Zola at odds with the powerful military and political elite, but it also galvanized public opinion in favor of Dreyfus. Maitre Labori and Maitre Clamenceau were two of the leading defense lawyers in the case. They worked tirelessly to prove Dreyfus's innocence and ultimately succeeded in securing a retrial in 1899. The retrial resulted in Dreyfus's acquittal and his reinstatement in the army.
