12th 1784 1849 1850 Rough Scrap Taylor Zachary

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the essence of Zachary Taylor, the 12th President of the United States, who served as commander in chief of the U.S. Army from 1845 to 1849 and was elected president in 1849. Born on November 24, 1784, in Barboursville, Virginia, Taylor earned the nickname "Old Rough-and-Ready" for his no-nonsense approach to military leadership. Taylor's military career began in 1808 when he joined the U.S. Army at the age of 22. He rose through the ranks, serving in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. His military successes, including his victory in the Battle of Buena Vista, brought him national recognition and set the stage for his political career. In this image, Taylor is depicted wearing a blue military jacket, a fitting tribute to his long and distinguished military service. The portrait, taken in 1850, just one year into his presidency, shows a man who was both respected and revered by his fellow soldiers and citizens. Taylor's presidency was brief, as he served for just 16 months before dying unexpectedly on July 9, 1850, due to illness. Despite his short tenure, Taylor left a lasting impact on American history. He was the first president to die in office without having been born in the United States, and he was the last president to have served in the military before becoming commander in chief. This photograph is a testament to Taylor's military legacy and his place in American history as a respected and accomplished soldier and leader. The image, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the United States was forging its identity as a nation and Taylor was a key figure in shaping its destiny.
