Xenophon, Greek soldier and historian
Xenophon (c.444-c.357 BC), greek historian and soldier. Born in Athens, Xenophon was a pupil of the famous philosopher Socrates. He is the first known writer of shorthand, which he used to record the ideas of Socrates. He is remembered mainly for his accounts of his later exploits as a wandering soldier. These started when he was given command in the retreating Greek contingent of a defeated Persian army in 401 BC. The Anabasis gives an account of this epic retreat. He participated in many other campaigns, including some for other Greek city states against Athens. He settled near Sparta and eventually retired to Corinth where he died. This engraving first appeared in The History of Philosophy by Thomas Stanley, published in London in 1656

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Xenophon, a remarkable Greek soldier and historian who lived during the 5th and 4th centuries BC. Born in Athens, Xenophon was not only a pupil of the renowned philosopher Socrates but also an innovator in his own right. He is credited as being the first known writer of shorthand, using this skill to record the profound ideas espoused by his mentor. However, it is for his daring exploits as a wandering soldier that Xenophon truly left his mark on history. The image depicts him in a moment of contemplation, perhaps reflecting on one of his many campaigns or strategizing for future battles. His most famous account, "The Anabasis" chronicles an epic retreat after leading a defeated Persian army back to Greece in 401 BC. Beyond military conquests, Xenophon's involvement extended to various campaigns for different Greek city-states against Athens. Eventually settling near Sparta and retiring in Corinth where he met his end, he became widely respected as both a philosopher and historian. This enchanting engraving from Thomas Stanley's "The History of Philosophy" published in London during 1656 showcases Xenophon's timeless legacy. Through Todd-White Art Photography's lens, we are transported back to ancient times - witnessing the brilliance and courage embodied by this extraordinary man who forever shaped our understanding of philosophy and history.
