Downs Germans Guynemer Minute Ww 1

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the chaotic skies above the Western Front during World War 1, French Ace pilot René Fonck Guynemer (1894-1917) proved himself to be an unrelenting force against the German air fleet. On this fateful day in 1917, Guynemer, a 23-year-old flying ace with the Escadrille N.77, achieved an extraordinary feat in the span of just one minute. The photograph captures the moment immediately following his first double victory, as smoke trails from the wreckage of two German Fokker Eindecker planes crisscross the sky behind him. Guynemer's exploits began at 10:30 am, when he engaged in a fierce dogfight with a German Albatros D.III and a Fokker Eindecker. With quick reflexes and unwavering determination, he managed to down both enemy planes within the same minute. The first victory came when he fired a burst of bullets into the Albatros' fuel tank, causing it to burst into flames. The second victory was even more dramatic, as he skillfully maneuvered his Nieuport 17 fighter to outmaneuver the Fokker Eindecker, sending it plummeting to the ground. But Guynemer's success didn't end there. Later that same day, he went on to claim two more German planes, bringing his total number of confirmed victories to 12. This heroic performance earned him the nickname "The Sphinx of the Skies" and solidified his place in the annals of military aviation history. This evocative photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the intense and dangerous world of aerial combat during World War 1. It stands as a testament to the bravery and skill of pilots like Guynemer, who risked their lives to change the course of history.
