Wroughton, Wiltshire US_7PH_GP_LOC209_V_5004

WROUGHTON, Wiltshire. This vertical photograph (taken in 1944 by the US Army Air Force) shows Barbury Castle hillfort, RAF Wroughton (centre), and the village of Wroughton. Wear lines indicate Barbury Castle and the Ridgeway have been used as a thoroughfare by military traffic. There are a number of aircraft in holding areas around the airfield, probably awaiting repairs. Most of the hangars are still extant and now in use by the Science Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Wroughton, Wiltshire US_7PH_GP_LOC209_V_5004," offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the past. Taken in 1944 by the US Army Air Force, this vertical photograph showcases an array of historical landmarks and intriguing details. At first glance, one's eyes are drawn to Barbury Castle hillfort, proudly standing amidst the picturesque landscape. Its ancient earthwork fortifications tell tales of Iron Age civilizations that once thrived in this very spot. The wear lines etched on the land reveal how Barbury Castle and the Ridgeway served as vital thoroughfares for military traffic throughout history. In the heart of this enchanting scene lies RAF Wroughton, its presence commanding attention with its strategic positioning. Surrounding it is a fleet of aircraft patiently waiting in holding areas, perhaps anticipating much-needed repairs during World War II. These silent sentinels bear witness to a time when skies were filled with bravery and sacrifice.
