EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Victorian-era Workhouse Infirmary: St Giles Poor Law Infirmary, Camberwell, London, 1908" 2.. This evocative photograph captures the administrative offices of St Giles Poor Law Infirmary, located on Havil Street in Camberwell, South East London, during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The offices, which fronted onto Brunswick Road (now Brunswick Villas), were a crucial part of the workhouse complex that aimed to provide shelter, care, and medical assistance to the destitute and impoverished population of London. The first workhouse buildings on this site were erected in 1818, but the medical facilities underwent significant expansion during the 1870s. The image showcases the impressive brickwork and architectural details of the administrative offices, which stand as a testament to the historical importance of this institution in providing essential services to those in need. The photograph, taken in 1908, reveals the intricate details of the building's facade, with its arched windows, intricate brickwork, and the distinctive "St Giles" sign atop the structure. The image also highlights the surrounding street scene, with the narrow, cobblestone street and the modest housing in the background, providing a glimpse into the living conditions of the time. St Giles Poor Law Infirmary later evolved into St Giles Hospital, continuing its mission to provide healthcare and care for the local community well into the 20th century. This photograph offers a unique perspective on the history of poverty, housing, and healthcare in London during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
