EDITORS COMMENTS
This image provides a rare glimpse into the interior of the Defence, one of the infamous Woolwich hulks that once served as a prison and workhouse for paupers in the mid-19th century. Dated 1862, this sectional view offers a detailed look at the intricacies of the former warship's conversion into a penal institution. The Defence, a decommissioned 74-gun third-rate ship, was one of several hulks moored in the Thames Estuary off Woolwich, England. These hulks, which also included the Dreadnought and the Warspite, were repurposed as prisons and workhouses to house the growing population of paupers and criminals in the area. The interior of the Defence, as depicted in this image, reveals a labyrinthine network of corridors, cells, and common areas. The cells, which can be seen in the lower left corner, are small and cramped, with each one barely large enough to accommodate a single occupant. The common areas, such as the one in the upper right corner, appear to be used for communal activities and work. The conversion of the Defence and other hulks into prisons and workhouses was a controversial practice at the time. Critics argued that the conditions were inhumane, with overcrowding, poor sanitation, and lack of adequate food and medical care leading to widespread disease and suffering. Despite these concerns, the practice continued until the late 19th century, when the hulks were finally decommissioned and replaced with more modern penal institutions. This sectional view of the Defence offers a unique perspective on a little-known chapter in the history of Woolwich and the wider social history of Victorian England. It serves as a poignant reminder of the harsh realities faced by the most vulnerable members of society during this period.
