In this evocative image from the annals of ancient history, a Pictish warrior stands proudly, dressed in the distinctive blue-green hue of woad. The Picts were an enigmatic people who inhabited the northern parts of Scotland during the late Iron Age and early Medieval periods, from around 300 AD to the 9th century. Their name is believed to derive from the Latin term "picti," meaning "painted people," a reference to their extensive use of woad for both decorative and protective purposes. The warrior in this photograph appears to be undergoing a deforming ritual, a common practice among the Picts and other Celtic tribes. The purpose of these rituals is not entirely clear, but it is thought that they may have served to mark significant life events, such as coming of age or entering into battle. The deformation may have also been believed to confer supernatural powers or protection. The warrior's body is adorned with intricate tattoos and patterns, some of which are thought to represent animals, such as bears and boars, or abstract designs. The woad dye, which was derived from the plant Isatis tinctoria, was applied to the skin through a laborious process involving crushing the plant and applying it as a paste.
