EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking 1824 print depicts Bogislav, Graf Tauentzien von Wittenberg, a prominent German military leader of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Wittenberg, Saxony in 1726, Tauentzien rose through the ranks of the Prussian military, becoming a major general in 1772 and a field marshal in 1793. The oval portrait shows Tauentzien wearing the uniform of a Prussian general, complete with a red sash and gold epaulets. The sash, a symbol of high military rank, is draped over his left shoulder and secured with a golden buckle. Tauentzien's stern expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and leadership. Tauentzien's military career began in earnest during the Seven Years' War, where he distinguished himself in several battles. However, his greatest achievements came during the Napoleonic Wars, where he successfully defended Berlin against the French in 1796 and 1806. Tauentzien's tactical brilliance and unwavering loyalty to the Prussian crown earned him the nickname "The Savior of Berlin." Despite his military successes, Tauentzien's life was not without tragedy. In 1786, his wife and five children died in a fire at their home, leaving him devastated. Tauentzien continued to serve his country, however, and played a key role in the rebuilding of the Prussian military after the Napoleonic Wars. This print, created in 1824, serves as a testament to Tauentzien's military prowess and enduring legacy. The red sash and gold epaulets on his uniform are symbols of his high rank and dedication to the Prussian military, while his stern expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and resolve. Tauentzien's story is one of courage, leadership, and resilience in the face of adversity.
