In this striking photograph, Winifred Cavendish-Bentinck, Duchess of Portland, is depicted shortly after her marriage to the 6th Earl of Portland in 1889. Born on March 26, 1863, Winifred was the eldest daughter of William Cavendish-Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland, and his wife, Lady Geraldine Sackville-West. Her marriage to the Earl marked the beginning of a prominent and influential life for the Duchess. The Duchess's illustrious career began when she was appointed as Mistress of the Robes to Queen Alexandra in 1910, a role she held until 1935. In this capacity, she was responsible for managing the Queen's wardrobe and household, a position that required both grace and diplomacy. Her dedication to her duties and her close relationship with the Queen earned her the respect and admiration of the court. Winifred Cavendish-Bentinck was also a pioneering figure in animal welfare. In 1924, she became the first president of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), a position she held until her death in 1954.
