In this striking photograph, Winifred Cavendish-Bentinck, Duchess of Portland, is depicted shortly after her marriage to the 6th Earl of Portland in 1889. Born on March 26, 1863, Winifred was the eldest daughter of William Cavendish-Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland, and his wife, Lady Geraldine Sackville-West. Her marriage to the Earl marked the beginning of a prominent and influential life for the Duchess. The Duchess's illustrious career began when she was appointed as Mistress of the Robes to Queen Alexandra in 1910, a role she held until 1935. In this capacity, she was responsible for managing the Queen's wardrobe and household, a position that required both grace and diplomacy. Her dedication to her duties and her close relationship with the Queen earned her the respect and admiration of the court. Winifred Cavendish-Bentinck was also a pioneering figure in animal welfare. In 1924, she became the first president of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), a position she held until her death in 1954. Her commitment to the cause was driven by her deep love for animals and her belief in their rights to be treated with compassion and respect. Throughout her long and distinguished life, Winifred Cavendish-Bentinck, Duchess of Portland, was a devoted wife, a dedicated public servant, and a champion for animal welfare.
