This evocative image captures the moment of daring concealment at Boscobel House in Shropshire, where William Pendrill (1628-1693) played a pivotal role in the escape of King Charles II after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. The King, disguised as a commoner, had sought refuge in an oak tree, known as the Boscobel Oak, to evade capture by the forces of Oliver Cromwell. Pendrill, a loyal servant, arranged for the King's safe passage to France, aiding him in his second escape by lowering a ladder from the tree and guiding him down to safety. The poem inscribed below the illustration pays tribute to Pendrill's unwavering loyalty to his sovereign: "Here Pendrill, with steady hand, The ladder to the King did stand, His Majesty, in disguise, Descended from the Boscobel Oak, To France and freedom, safe and sound, In Pendrill's care he was found." The Boscobel Oak, a symbol of English history and the monarchy, stands proudly in the background, its gnarled branches reaching towards the heavens.
