This evocative portrait captures the stern and resolute visage of William Laud, who rose from humble beginnings as the son of a Gloucestershire glover to become one of the most influential religious and political figures in seventeenth-century England. Born in 1573, Laud studied at Oxford University before embarking on a distinguished ecclesiastical career. He was appointed Bishop of Bath and Wells in 1611, and later became Bishop of London in 1628. In 1633, Laud's star continued to ascend when he was consecrated as Archbishop of Canterbury, a position he held until his downfall in 1645. Laud's tenure as Archbishop was marked by his efforts to reform the Church of England and restore liturgical order, which earned him both admirers and detractors. His advocacy for a more ceremonial and hierarchical approach to worship, as well as his support for the monarchy, put him at odds with the Puritan movement that was gaining momentum during this period. Laud's reforms, collectively known as the Laudian Reforms, included the introduction of new liturgical books, the restoration of altars and other ceremonial practices, and the establishment of a more centralized ecclesiastical hierarchy. Despite his accomplishments, Laud's reforms proved to be divisive, and his unyielding stance on religious and political issues ultimately led to his downfall during the English Civil War. He was impeached by the Long Parliament in 1641 and later tried and executed in 1645.
