EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the regal presence of King William IV, the last monarch of the House of Hanover and the seventh monarch of the House of Windsor. Born on August 21, 1765, as Prince William Henry, Duke of Clarence and St Andrews, he was the third surviving son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. William's early life was marked by scandal and controversy. He was married twice, first to Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1797, with whom he had ten children, and later to Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen in 1818. His first wife's premature death in childbirth in 1817 made him a mourning father and a popular figure among the British people. William ascended to the throne on June 26, 1830, following the death of his brother, King George IV. His reign was marked by political instability and economic hardship, but he was a popular monarch who was loved by the people for his down-to-earth manner and his support for the navy. This portrait, taken in 1837, shows King William IV in his later years, with a stern expression and a well-groomed beard. He is dressed in the robes of the Order of the Garter, one of the most prestigious orders of chivalry in the United Kingdom. The portrait captures the dignity and authority of the monarch, as well as the passage of time and the weight of history on his shoulders. King William IV reigned until his death on June 20, 1837, when he was succeeded by his niece, Queen Victoria. This portrait is a testament to his reign and his place in British history as a beloved and respected monarch.
