Born in the House of Orange in the Netherlands, William rose to prominence as a military leader and became the Prince of Orange in 1672. In 1688, he invaded England with his wife, Mary II, to depose the Catholic King James II, who was perceived as a threat to Protestant rule. William's successful invasion, known as the Glorious Revolution, led to his ascension to the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones.
