EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print depicts the Flemish artist Willem Strada, born in Antwerp in 1536. Strada was a prominent figure in the world of 17th century art, known for his exceptional talent in painting landscapes and historical scenes. Born into a family of artists, Strada was influenced by the works of his father, Jan Baptist Strada, and his uncle, Jan Sanders van Hemessen. He began his artistic training under the tutelage of Jan van Balen and later studied under Peter Paul Rubens. Strada's early works reflected the influence of the Mannerist style, which was popular during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. However, he later developed a unique style that combined the naturalism of the Baroque period with the intricacy and detail of Mannerism. One of Strada's most famous works is "The Triumph of the Eucharist," a large-scale painting that depicts the triumphant entry of the Eucharist into Antwerp in 1585. The work is characterized by its grandeur, intricate detail, and vivid colors. Strada's other notable works include "The Adoration of the Shepherds," "The Descent from the Cross," and "The Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew." His paintings were highly sought after by collectors and patrons, and he received numerous commissions from the Church and the aristocracy. Despite his success, Strada faced many challenges during his career. He was forced to flee Antwerp during the Spanish siege of 1585 and spent several years in exile in France. He later returned to Antwerp, where he continued to paint until his death in 1615. This print captures the essence of Willem Strada's artistic genius, showcasing his mastery of color, composition, and detail. It is a testament to his enduring legacy as one of the greatest artists of the Flemish School.
