1423 Benoist Dick Lover Mayor Merchant Whittington

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Richard Whittington, also known as Dick Whittington, was a prominent historical figure in 15th century England. Born in the market town of Sutton Cheyney in Warwickshire around 1354, Whittington rose to become a successful merchant and later served as the Lord Mayor of London an unprecedented three times. This evocative print, titled "Sir Richard Whittington, Merchant, Lord Mayor of London and Cat-lover," captures the essence of Whittington's legacy. The image depicts a regal Whittington, dressed in the robes of the Lord Mayor, seated before a grand fireplace. A contented-looking cat sits on a cushion at his feet, adding a touch of warmth and companionship to the scene. Whittington's connection to cats is a popular folklore tale that has endured through the centuries. According to legend, while on his journey to London to seek his fortune, Whittington heard the cry of the city's cats and made a vow that if he became Lord Mayor, he would provide for them. True to his word, upon becoming Lord Mayor, he established the first Blue Coat School, which not only provided education for children but also included a shelter for stray cats. Whittington's political career began in 1397 when he was elected an alderman, and he served his first term as Lord Mayor in 1406. He was re-elected in 1419 and again in 1421. During his tenure, he played a significant role in the rebuilding of London after the Great Fire of 1416 and oversaw the construction of the new St. Bartholomew's Hospital. This print, created by the renowned French engraver, Jules Joseph Lefebvre, captures the essence of Whittington's historical significance and his enduring connection to cats. The image is a testament to the enduring power of legend and the indelible mark left by this remarkable man on the annals of history.
