EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in the lives of the Maguire family, known for their diverse talents and careers. While Mary Maguire's father serves as a bat man with the British Expeditionary Force in France during World War II, her mother Mrs. Michael Maguire resides with their four daughters in a cozy maisonnette in Devonshire Place. The photograph showcases each daughter's unique pursuits: Pat, at 22 years old, is an enchanting singer; Joanne, aged 19, displays her acting skills while going over a script; Carmel, just 17 years old, exhibits her artistic talent by designing the family's dresses; and Lupe, at 16 years old, captivates viewers with her graceful dance moves. Mary herself has recently entered a nursing home for a minor operation but usually resides in Mayfair alongside her husband Captain Robert Gordon-Canning. The image portrays Lupe dancing gracefully on the left side of the frame while Pat stands center stage as she sings. Meanwhile, Joanne engrosses herself in studying a script while Carmel sketches away. This snapshot from April 25th, 1940 not only offers us insight into this remarkable family but also provides us with glimpses of fashion trends from that era.
