Bognor Regis, [1939-1945]. In a posed photograph outside The Tuck Shop at the junction of Upper Bognor Road (now the High Street) and Gloucester Road. It may be an exercise by the army in rounding up " Fifth Columnists". The fire service personnel have hoses attached to the back of a fire engine. [The building was demolished in 1968].

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a unique moment in history during the tumultuous years of World War II. The image showcases a soldier pointing his pistol at fire service personnel, creating an intriguing scene outside The Tuck Shop at the junction of Upper Bognor Road and Gloucester Road in Bognor Regis. It is believed that this may have been part of an army exercise aimed at identifying potential "Fifth Columnists" individuals suspected of aiding enemy forces. In contrast to the soldier's tense stance, the fire service personnel remain composed as they stand beside their fire engine with hoses attached to its back. Their presence suggests that even amidst wartime chaos, emergency services continued to fulfill their duty to protect and serve. It is worth noting that this historic building, which witnessed such dramatic moments, was sadly demolished in 1968. However, thanks to the L Alouette Collection housed at West Sussex Record Office, we can still relive these significant snapshots from our past. Frank Lalouette's lens skillfully captured this thought-provoking moment on the home front during World War II. As we delve into these archives and explore images like this one, it serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by both military personnel and civilians alike during times of conflict
