EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time as you approach the West Sussex County Asylum, now known as Graylingwell Hospital, located on College Lane in Summersdale, Chichester. Established in 1897, this grand Victorian and Edwardian institution was originally designed to provide care for the mentally ill, the poor, and the destitute. The approach to the hospital, as depicted in this photograph from around 1905, reveals the impressive driveway leading to the imposing building. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, workhouses and asylums were the primary means of caring for the most vulnerable members of society. The West Sussex County Asylum was no exception, housing both the mentally ill and the poor under one roof. The institution was governed by the Local Government Act of 1890, which required parishes to provide adequate care for their paupers. The hospital's impressive facade belied the harsh realities of life inside. Patients were often subjected to inhumane conditions and inadequate care. However, the Asylum also provided a refuge for those suffering from mental illness, many of whom would have otherwise been left to fend for themselves on the streets. The West Sussex County Asylum was later renamed Graylingwell Hospital in 1948, and part of the site also housed Summersdale Hospital. Today, the site stands as a testament to the history of mental health care in Sussex, and serves as a reminder of the important role that institutions like this played in caring for the most vulnerable members of society during a time when there were few other options available.
