1821 Devil Freischutz Glen Opera Performed Weber

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the dramatic moment from Act Two, Scene Six of Carl Maria von Weber's opera "Der Freischütz" (The Marksman), first performed in 1821. In this scene, titled "Im Wolfsschlucht" or "In the Wolfs Glen," the hero Max (played by tenor) is confronted by the devil Samiel (portrayed by a bass), who has appeared to claim the soul of Max's beloved Kaethe. Max, desperate to win Kaethe's love and keep his hunting marksmanship abilities, had made a pact with Samiel at the beginning of the opera. He had been given a magical bullet, which could only be used once to kill a wolf in the woods. However, Max had used the bullet to cheat in a hunting contest, and now Samiel demands his due. In this image, Max, visibly shaken, pleads with Samiel for mercy. Samiel, represented as a terrifying figure with horns and a menacing expression, taunts Max with the knowledge of his deceit. The scene is set in a dark, ominous glen, with twisted trees and shadows adding to the sense of foreboding. The opera "Der Freischütz" was groundbreaking in its use of supernatural themes and its integration of folk music into the score. The role of Samiel, sung by the bass, was particularly challenging and became a favorite among singers. This image provides a glimpse into the rich history of this opera and the dramatic tension that drives its plot. The photograph is from the Mary Evans Picture Library and is a valuable historical record of the production of "Der Freischütz" in the past. It is a testament to the enduring power of music and the human desire to tell stories of love, morality, and the supernatural.
