EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Act Two, Scene Two of the historic opera "Weber/Oberon/Liebig: Haroun al Raschid or The Three Wishes," which was first performed in 1826. In this scene, set at the opulent court of Haroun el Rashid, the hero Huon comes to the rescue of the beautiful Reiza, who is being forced into an unwanted marriage. With the help of a magical horn, gifted to him by the sorcerer Aladdin, Huon transports Reiza away from the court, carrying her off into the night. The opera, with music by the renowned German composer Carl Maria von Weber and libretto by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué and Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin, is based on the Arabian Nights tale of Haroun al Raschid and his three wishes. The magical horn, which grants the bearer three wishes, is a popular motif in many Middle Eastern and European folktales. The image showcases the grandeur of the court of Haroun el Raschid, with its ornate architecture, richly dressed courtiers, and magnificent throne. Huon and Reiza, dressed in flowing robes, can be seen in the foreground, with Huon holding the magical horn aloft as they make their escape. The use of light and shadow adds to the sense of drama and excitement, while the intricate details of the costumes and setting transport the viewer to another time and place. This enchanting scene from "Weber/Oberon/Liebig: Haroun al Raschid or The Three Wishes" is a testament to the power of music and storytelling to transport us to far-off lands and immerse us in magical worlds.
