EDITORS COMMENTS
Matthew Webb: The Daring Swimmer of the English Channel in 1875, as Captured in this Historic CDV This CDV, or carte-de-visite, features Matthew Webb, the renowned English swimmer who made history by becoming the first person to swim the English Channel in 1875. The photograph, taken in 1883, captures Webb in the prime of his career, proudly displaying two medals he had earned for his remarkable achievements. Born on December 1, 1848, in Walsall, Staffordshire, England, Webb's passion for swimming began at an early age. He started swimming in local ponds and rivers, and by the age of 16, he had already set several long-distance swimming records. However, it was his ambitious goal to swim the English Channel that would cement his place in history. The English Channel, a treacherous and unpredictable body of water, had long been considered an impossible feat for swimmers. But Webb, determined and undeterred, set out to prove otherwise. On August 24, 1875, he embarked on his historic swim, braving the rough waters, strong currents, and cold temperatures. After an exhausting 21 hours and 45 minutes, Webb finally reached the French shore, becoming the first person to swim the English Channel. The two medals Webb is wearing in this CDV are a testament to his incredible achievements. The larger medal, the Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal, was awarded to him for his heroic actions in saving a drowning boy in 1872. The smaller medal, the Swimming Association of Great Britain's Gold Medal, was presented to him for his record-breaking swim across the English Channel. This CDV is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the life of a remarkable man who dared to challenge the impossible and succeeded. It is a reminder of the power of determination, perseverance, and the human spirit.
