EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the majestic Warship Strasbourg, a proud symbol of French naval power during the 1930s. The Warship Strasbourg was a Dunkerque-class battleship, named after the city in Alsace, France. Commissioned in 1937, she was one of the most advanced battleships of her time, boasting a displacement of over 31,000 tons and a top speed of 28 knots. At the heart of this powerful warship were its formidable guns, 13 of which are visible in this image, arranged in five turrets along the deck. Each gun barrel, measuring over 45 calories in length, was capable of firing a 1,350-pound shell a distance of over 20,000 yards. The steam-powered Warship Strasbourg was a testament to the engineering prowess of the time, with its complex machinery and intricate systems designed to ensure the smooth operation of the ship and its weapons. The Warship Strasbourg saw action during World War II, taking part in several engagements in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. She was eventually scuttled by her crew in Toulon Harbor in November 1942 to prevent her from falling into German hands. This photograph, taken in the 1930s, captures the Warship Strasbourg in all her glory, a symbol of France's naval might and determination during a time of global turmoil.
