Warneford attacks Zeppelin at Ghent

On 7 June 1915 at Ghent, Belgium, Reginald Alexander John Warneford, VC (1891- 1915), a Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) officer, flying a Morane-Saulnier Type L, attacked and completely destroyed the German airship LZ37 in mid air. He had chased the airship from the coast near Ostend and, despite its defensive machine-gun fire, succeeded in dropping his bombs on it, the last of which set the airship on fire. The explosion overturned the attacking plane and stopped its engine. Having no alternative, Warneford had to land in hostile country, but after 35 minutes spent on repairs, he managed to restart the engine and returned to base. For his bravery, Warneford received the Victoria Cross. Painting by Raymond Sheppar"

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the dramatic skies above Ghent, Belgium on 7 June 1915, Reginald Alexander John Warneford, a brave and heroic Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) officer, embarked on an extreme mission to attack and destroy the German airship LZ37. With the world at war and the threat of Zeppelin raids looming, Warneford flew a Morane-Saulnier Type L fighter plane, taking off from the coast near Ostend. Despite the airship's defensive machine-gun fire, Warneford pressed on, determined to complete his mission. In a daring and historic moment, he dropped his bombs on the LZ37, the last of which ignited an explosive fire. The force of the explosion overturned Warneford's plane, stopping its engine. Facing the danger head-on, Warneford had no alternative but to land in hostile territory. After 35 minutes of intense repair work, he managed to restart the engine and bravely returned to base. For his heroic actions, Warneford was awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor in the face of the enemy. This painting by Raymond Sheppard brings to life the dramatic events of that day, capturing the intensity and danger of the encounter between Warneford and the German airship. The image of Warneford's plane, with its bombs dropped and engine smoking, is a testament to the extreme bravery and heroism of the First World War's unsung heroes.
