EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the chaos and displacement caused by the invasion of the Huns in Central Europe around 400 AD. The Huns, a nomadic people from the eastern steppes, had been pushing westward for decades, but it was under the leadership of Attila that they became a major threat to the Roman Empire. The invasion set off a domino effect, as various tribes and peoples were forced to flee before the advancing Huns. In this print, we see groups of people and their livestock wandering westward through the forests and open fields of Central Europe. The once peaceful landscapes have been transformed into a scene of upheaval, as families and entire communities are on the move in search of safety and security. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the historical events that shaped Europe and the world as we know it. The Huns' invasion marked the end of the Roman peace and the beginning of the Migration Period, during which Europe saw a significant movement of peoples from the east to the west. This period was marked by the rise and fall of various kingdoms and empires, as well as the spread of new cultures and ideas. The events depicted in this print played a crucial role in shaping the cultural and political landscape of Europe, and continue to be studied by historians and scholars to this day.
