EDITORS COMMENTS
This elegant oval print depicts Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-1751), the eldest son of King George II and father of King George III. The portrait, created around 1751, captures Frederick in regal attire, wearing the royal crown and holding a palette and brushes, symbolizing his role as a patron of the arts. The inscription "I. II. PRINCE OF WALES" is displayed prominently at the bottom, while the Latin motto "Dieu et mon Droit" (God and my right) encircles the border. Frederick Louis, Duke of Edinburgh and Earl of Chester, was born on January 1, 1707, and was the heir apparent to the British throne until his father's death in 1727. Although he was a popular figure among the people, his relationship with his father was strained, and he lived apart from the royal court for much of his life. The prince was known for his love of hunting, music, and the arts, and he supported numerous charities and institutions. He also played a significant role in the military, leading British forces during the War of the Austrian Succession. Tragically, Frederick died at the young age of 49, just two years before his father. His death marked the end of the Hanoverian dynasty's direct male line in Britain, and his son, George III, eventually ascended to the throne in 1760. This historic print, produced in the late 18th century, offers a glimpse into the life and legacy of a fascinating figure in British history. The intricate details and rich colors bring the portrait to life, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical prints or royal memorabilia.
