This series of engravings chronicles the historic journey of Cleopatra's Needle, an ancient Egyptian obelisk, from its homeland to London in 1878. The images, clockwise from top left, offer a glimpse into the intriguing voyage of this remarkable artifact. In the first image, a day signal is being made from the Cleopatra to the tug, indicating the obelisk ship's readiness to depart. The second engraving shows the crew making a night signal on the Cleopatra, using lights to communicate with other vessels in the darkness.
