The portrait, painted by the renowned French artist Jean-Baptiste Largillière in 1694, depicts a young Voltaire at the age of 20, before he adopted the name Voltaire and began his literary career. Voltaire was born in Paris on November 21, 1694, and grew up in a family of modest means.
