Born on November 21, 1694, Voltaire lived an extraordinary life that spanned over eight decades, during which he left an indelible mark on European literature and philosophy. In this photograph, taken around 1778, Voltaire is depicted in the twilight of his life, with the passage of time evident in his wrinkled face and stooped posture. He is seen walking with a cane, a symbol of his advancing age, and wearing a tall, powdered wig that was fashionable during the 18th century. The philosopher is dressed in a simple, long coat, and he wears a hat to shield himself from the elements. Voltaire's contributions to French literature and philosophy were immense. He was a prolific writer, producing over 20,000 letters and more than 2,000 books and essays.
