EDITORS COMMENTS
Vincenzo Cibolla, the Notorious Neapolitan Brigand of the 1860s This evocative photograph captures the notorious face of Vincenzo Cibolla, an Italian brigand who terrorized the countryside of Naples during the 1860s. Born in the rural region of Basilicata, Cibolla and his band of outlaws robbed travelers, pillaged villages, and evaded capture for years. The Italian Peninsula was in a state of turmoil during the mid-19th century. The Risorgimento, or Italian Unification movement, was gaining momentum, and the Kingdom of Two Sicilies, which ruled southern Italy, was struggling to maintain control. Amidst the chaos, banditry flourished, and Cibolla became one of the most infamous figures of the time. Despite the challenges of the era, law enforcement persisted in their pursuit of the elusive brigand. Cibolla's luck eventually ran out in 1861 when he was cornered by Italian Carabinieri in the mountains near Avellino. The photograph depicts Cibolla after his capture, his rugged features etched with the marks of a life spent on the run. He is shown with a defiant expression, as if daring his captors to do their worst. The capture of Vincenzo Cibolla was a significant moment in the history of law enforcement in Italy. It marked the end of an era of widespread banditry and signaled the beginning of a new chapter in the country's development. Today, Cibolla's story serves as a reminder of the complex and often violent history of Italy during the 19th century.
