View of South London

The Colosseum Print, a view of south London, based on a photograph by Antoine Claudet taken from the top of the Duke of Yorks Column, 124 feet high. An artist, C.F.Sargent, then drew the photographic detail onto a wood block which was then sent to the engraving firm of Ebenezer Landell. Two months of continuous work followed and the work was then printed by Palmer and Clayton. The picture was given away with the 7th January 1843 issue of the Illustrated London News. Notable landmarks shown include St Pauls Cathedral on the left, Westminster Abbey at the centre, and Buckingham Palace to the right. Date: 1842

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled 'The Colosseum Print' or 'View of South London,' showcases a breathtaking panorama of the Metropolis as it appeared in 1842. The photographic basis for this masterpiece was captured by the renowned French photographer Antoine Claudet from the top of the Duke of York's Column, which stands an impressive 124 feet high. The intricate photographic detail was then meticulously transferred onto a wooden block by the skilled hand of artist C.F. Sargent. The engraving firm of Ebenezer Landell was then entrusted with the task of bringing this detailed drawing to life through the art of engraving. The process was a labor-intensive one, taking a full two months to complete. Once finished, the print was brought to life through the expert hands of Palmer and Clayton, the esteemed printing firm of the time. This exquisite print was a gift to the readers of the Illustrated London News with the 7th January 1843 issue. The print offers a stunning bird's-eye view of some of London's most iconic landmarks, including St. Paul's Cathedral on the left, Westminster Abbey at the center, and Buckingham Palace to the right. The print serves as a testament to the artistic and technological prowess of the time, offering a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the beauty and grandeur of 19th-century London.
