EDITORS COMMENTS
November 30, 1866: A Historical Moment in Wolverhampton's Past - In this striking photograph from Mary Evans Picture Library, Queen Victoria (1819-1901) is seen bestowing the honor of knighthood upon Mayor John Morris (1813-1882) of Wolverhampton, following the unveiling of a statue of Prince Albert (1819-1861) in Queen's Square. The statue, a gift from the people of Wolverhampton, was a symbol of their warm welcome and appreciation for the late Prince Consort, who had been deeply loved by the Queen and the British people. The scene takes place in the ornate pavilion, where the Queen's retinue and Mayor Morris's dignitaries are gathered. The Queen, dressed in her royal robes and wearing a muff, sits regally on her throne, while Morris, wearing his mayoral robes and a bowed head, stands before her. The atmosphere is one of solemnity and respect, as the Queen recognizes Morris's role in the successful unveiling ceremony and his dedication to the town. The unveiling of the statue of Prince Albert was a significant event in Wolverhampton's history, and this photograph offers a unique glimpse into the grandeur and pageantry of royal events during the Victorian era. The image captures the essence of a proud moment for the town and its people, as they were recognized by the monarch for their loyalty and generosity.
