EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the historic Vickers Vimy biplane, which made headlines in 1919 for its record-breaking transatlantic flight. The Vickers Vimy was a two-engine biplane designed by Barnes Wallis and Manning Wardle, and was originally built as a transport aircraft for the Royal Air Force (RAF). The aircraft, registration number G-EAQN, became famous when it was flown across the Atlantic Ocean by John Alcock and Arthur Brown in June 1919. The daring transatlantic crossing took just 16 hours and 14 minutes, making Alcock and Brown the first people to fly non-stop across the Atlantic. The Vickers Vimy landed in Newfoundland, Canada, and its successful completion of the flight brought great pride to the British people and solidified the reputation of aviation as a viable means of long-distance travel. This photograph showcases the Vickers Vimy in all its glory, with its distinctive biplane wings and two Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engines prominently displayed. The image captures the plane's sleek design and the determination of the pilots who flew it on this groundbreaking journey. The photograph also serves as a reminder of the incredible advancements in aviation technology that took place in the early 20th century, and the spirit of adventure and exploration that drove people to push the boundaries of what was thought possible.
