The Vermont, a pre-dreadnought battleship of the United States Navy, was one of the first ships to transit the newly-opened canal, which connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and revolutionized global trade and travel. Built between 1908 and 1910, the Panama Canal was a remarkable engineering feat, taking over 30 years to complete due to numerous challenges, including the difficult terrain and the engineering and logistical complexities of constructing a waterway through a narrow isthmus.
