Canals Gatun Locks Panama

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the USS Vermont (BB-20) making its way through the Gatun Locks in the Panama Canal on August 23, 1915. The Vermont, a pre-dreadnought battleship of the United States Navy, was one of the first ships to transit the newly-opened canal, which connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and revolutionized global trade and travel. Built between 1908 and 1910, the Panama Canal was a remarkable engineering feat, taking over 30 years to complete due to numerous challenges, including the difficult terrain and the engineering and logistical complexities of constructing a waterway through a narrow isthmus. The canal consisted of three sets of locks, with Gatun being the largest and most important, allowing the passage of ships between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The USS Vermont, with its impressive size and firepower, was a sight to behold as it navigated the locks, assisted by mules and canal workers. The passage through the locks involved a series of steps, with the ship being raised and lowered using water to counterbalance the weight of the vessel. The Vermont's journey through the canal marked a significant moment in the history of naval transportation and demonstrated the canal's importance as a strategic and economic asset. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the USS Vermont's historic voyage through the Gatun Locks and the remarkable engineering feat that was the Panama Canal. Circa 1915.
