This image depicts Vasily II Vasiliyevich, the Grand Prince of Moscow from 1425 to 1462. Born as the son of Vasily I, Vasily II was a Russian royal who faced a tumultuous reign marked by two depositions. He was first deposed in 1445 by Dmitri Shemyaka, an usurper who seized the throne. However, Vasily II was able to regain his position in 1446, only to be deposed once again in 1460. In 1462, Vasily II was blinded by Dmitri Shemyaka, who once again seized the throne. Despite the challenges he faced throughout his reign, Vasily II is remembered for his significant contributions to Russian history. He strengthened the Grand Duchy of Moscow's power and influence, expanding its territory and consolidating its position as a major political force in Eastern Europe. Additionally, Vasily II is credited with promoting cultural development in Moscow, including the establishment of the first printing press in Russia.
