EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image captures the moment of final rest for the remains of the Varuss Legions, buried by their commander, Germanicus, following their decisive defeat at the hands of the Germans in the Teutoburg Forest in Germany, around AD 14. The event marked a significant turning point in the Roman conquest of Germania, as the Romans suffered their largest military defeat up to that point. The Varuss Legions, numbering around 17,000 men, were sent by the Roman Emperor Augustus to subdue the Germanic tribes in Germania. However, they were ambushed and surrounded by a vast Germanic army led by Arminius, a Roman-educated German chieftain. The Romans were besieged for several days, and when they attempted to break out, they were met with a devastating counterattack. Germanicus, the step-grandnephew of Augustus, was sent to avenge the defeat and restore Roman pride. He arrived in Germania in AD 15 with a large army and managed to defeat Arminius in several battles. However, the Romans were unable to locate the remains of the Varuss Legions, and it was not until Germanicus arrived at the site of the battle that he discovered the grisly scene of the mass burial. The image of Germanicus overseeing the burial of his fallen comrades is a powerful symbol of the human cost of war and the importance of honoring the dead. The event was later commemorated in Roman literature, including Tacitus' Annals, and became a significant part of Roman military history. This print, from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the past and reminds us of the sacrifices made by soldiers throughout history. The image is a poignant reminder of the importance of remembering the past and honoring those who have given their lives in the pursuit of peace and security.
