EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases a fascinating variety of snakes from different genera and species, captured in the late 19th century in India. The first snake in this intriguing collection is an Anaconda (Eunectes murinus), also known as the "Anaconda Snake" or "Water Boa." With its massive size and powerful muscles, the Anaconda is the world's largest extant snake species. The name "Anaconda" comes from the Quechua word "anaconda," which means "serpent of the water." Next, we have the "Pedda Poda" Python (unidentified species), a non-venomous constricting snake native to South Asia. The name "Pedda Poda" translates to "big foot" in Telugu, referring to the large, webbed feet of this snake that help it navigate through aquatic environments. The third snake is the "Port Natal" Python (Ball Python, Python natalensis), a non-venomous snake native to Central and West Africa. Despite its name, this snake is not native to Port Natal in South Africa but was likely named after the port due to its discovery there. Fourth, we have a Rattlesnake (genus Crotalus), specifically a Black Rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus). Rattlesnakes are venomous pit vipers native to the Americas. They are named for the rattling sound produced by the tail's rattles when threatened. Lastly, we have a Cobra (Naja tripudians), also known as the Indian Cobra or the Spectacled Cobra. This venomous snake is native to South and Southeast Asia and is known for its distinctive hood and distinctive eye markings. This historical photograph provides a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of snakes and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving these magnificent creatures for future generations.
