Known as the Battle of the Dover Roads or the Second Battle of the Downs, it was a pivotal engagement during the First Anglo-Dutch War. The Dutch fleet, led by the formidable Admiral Maarten Tromp (1597-1653), is depicted here triumphantly engaging the English forces under the command of Admiral Robert Blake (1598-1657).
