1867 Acted Bank Behind Control Defence Defences Ditch Fosse L Imestone Main System Vallum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the fossilized remnants of Vallum, the lesser-known yet historically significant component of Hadrian's Wall in England. Situated at Limestone Bank, Vallum lies hidden behind the more prominent stone structure of Hadrian's Wall, which is widely recognized for its defensive functions. However, Vallum serves a different purpose - it acted as a people-control structure, not a defense. The vallum system, consisting of a ditch and an earthen bank, was built around AD 122, preceding the construction of the main wall. The fosse ditch, visible in this image, was designed to obstruct and deter unwanted intrusions, particularly of cattle and other livestock, from entering the Roman territory. The earthen bank served as a barrier for the soldiers to patrol and monitor the movement of people. This photograph, taken in 1867, offers a glimpse into the rich archaeological history of Hadrian's Wall and its associated structures. The Vallum system, though often overshadowed by the main wall, played a crucial role in maintaining order and security in the Roman province. The stone wall, standing proudly in the foreground, is a testament to the engineering prowess of the Romans, while the Vallum, with its subtle yet essential function, underscores the intricate and multifaceted nature of the Roman occupation of Britain. This image, with its timeless beauty and historical significance, invites us to delve deeper into the fascinating history of Hadrian's Wall and the people who built it. The Vallum, a hidden gem, reveals the complexities and nuances of a bygone era, offering a unique perspective on the Roman legacy in England.
