Between September 1944 and March 1945, over 1,300 of these long-range ballistic missiles were fired from Nazi Germany, targeting the British capital. The V-2 was the world's first guided missile and the first weapon to be launched from a ballistic trajectory into an enemy's territory. Despite the ominous clouds of smoke and debris in this image, the reality of a V-2 rocket landing was far less dramatic for Londoners.
