Braun Raid Rocket

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artist's impression captures the terrifying moment a V-2 rocket, also known as a Vergeltungswaffe 2 or "Vengeance Weapon 2," landed in a London street during the Second World War. Between September 1944 and March 1945, over 1,300 of these long-range ballistic missiles were fired from Nazi Germany, targeting the British capital. The V-2 was the world's first guided missile and the first weapon to be launched from a ballistic trajectory into an enemy's territory. Despite the ominous clouds of smoke and debris in this image, the reality of a V-2 rocket landing was far less dramatic for Londoners. The rockets traveled at up to four times the speed of sound, making them virtually invisible until their destructive impact. The sudden, deafening explosion and the subsequent shockwave would leave devastation in their wake. The V-2 rocket was a product of the advanced scientific research and military innovation of the time. Designed by German engineer Wernher von Braun and his team at the Peenemünde Army Research Center, the V-2 was a precursor to modern ballistic missiles and space technology. Its development and use during the war marked a significant turning point in the history of military technology. This haunting image serves as a reminder of the destructive power of war and the devastating impact it can have on civilians. The V-2 rocket attacks on London were a grim chapter in the history of warfare, and the memory of these events continues to shape our understanding of the past and the importance of peace and international cooperation.
