This evocative photograph captures the imposing presence of the Union Workhouse in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, which opened its doors in 1900. Designed by architect JH Morton, the workhouse was located at Springwell Lane in Balby, replacing an older facility at Hexthorpe Lane. The Edwardian-era buildings, with their red-brick facade and intricate details, were dominated by a clock tower that also housed a large water tank. At the time, workhouses were institutions established to provide shelter, food, and work for the poor, the sick, and the destitute.
