Siamese twins Radica - Doodica
Siamese or Conjoined twins Radica - Doodica, also known as the Orissa sisters, who were joined at the chest (xiphopagus twins). Born in India in 1889, in 1893 they were purchased from their parents by the showman Captain Colman. In February 1902 they were separated as Doodica, right, was suffering from Tuberculosis. Radica survived the operation but died from Tuberculosis the following year. The operation was performed by the French surgeon Eugene Louis Doyen (1859 - 1916). Born in India in 1889, their extraordinary story took an unexpected turn when they were purchased by showman Captain Colman from their parents in 1893. However, fate had a different plan for these inseparable siblings. In February 1902, tragedy struck as Doodica fell victim to Tuberculosis. This devastating illness forced them to undergo a groundbreaking surgery led by the skilled French surgeon Eugene Louis Doyen. The operation aimed to separate the twins and save Doodica's life. Although Radica survived this intricate procedure, she tragically succumbed to Tuberculosis just one year later. The photograph captures a significant moment in medical history and provides insight into the lives of these remarkable individuals. It depicts a bedroom scene with several people present during this crucial time – including a nun attending to their needs while surrounded by concerned men and women.
